Basking in the bell-like tones of falling hammers and the warm, loving glow of the forges, Ivard smiled. This was his life, this pulsing merge of metal and heat to create new things. His callused hands took comfort in this warmth, and he didn't care that there were great machines to make these things faster than he could. What dwarf worth his salt would wield an axe made by a machine? Perhaps little things like nails and such, but never the important things. A proper weapon must have life, a soul, to best protect the wielder. He paused to wipe his brow and touch the key he wore. Some mistook it for an ornament, but it was very real, the key to the hidden room which held his most prized, and most dangerous, creations.
There were those above ground who said that the dwarves used no magic, but Ivard and his creations were living proof of their mistake. He had made a sword that could cut through glass and stone with ease, but could not scratch skin, and an axe that sang when used for righteous purposes. He had lovingly shaped a bracer that moved your arm and practically did your blocking for you, a crown that dispensed good advice to its wearer, and a strange steel quiver that sprouted an endless supply of arrows or crossbow bolts, but only if asked politely. He kept them safely hidden, for he knew that if ever humans heard of these wondrous things, he would never be left in peace again.

This is what happens when I get to go to Lowe's. I've been meaning to play with washers forever, but the other night I actually had enough in my pocket to buy a decent number of them, and also some 18ga steel wire (). The key is also a Lowe's find (I have a few more to play with, too), it's brass-colored and about 3 inches long, to give you an idea of the size of this thing. It's rather heavy, but quite comfortable, made of steel washers, steel wire, brass key and brass wire, a lock-washer that I thought looked nifty, and one dark blue glass gem.
It's definitely a bold piece, but perfect for steampunk or industrial outfits, or anything else you can think of.
This piece is for sale for $35. If you order quickly, I can even get it to you before Christmas!
It definitely sounds interesting! I'm on an industrial/hardware kick, and for some reason it brings to minds dwarven smiths. (And occasionally gnomes, but that's usually when things go wrong. )
